Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA)

An Overview:

Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is a specialized procedure aimed at retrieving sperm for use in assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). I, perform this procedure with utmost care and precision to ensure the best possible outcomes for my patients.

What is PESA?

PESA is a minimally invasive technique used to extract sperm directly from the epididymis, a structure located at the back of the testicle where sperm are stored and matured. This procedure is typically recommended for men with obstructive azoospermia, a condition where sperm production is normal but there is a blockage preventing sperm from being ejaculated.

How is PESA Performed?

During the PESA procedure, I use local anaesthesia to numb the scrotal area. A small needle is then inserted directly into the head of the epididymis through the scrotal skin. Once the needle is in place, fluid containing sperm is aspirated and collected for further processing in the laboratory.

Why Choose PESA?

PESA offers several advantages, including:

  1. Minimally invasive: PESA is performed using a small needle and does not require surgery, resulting in minimal discomfort and faster recovery.
  2. Effective: PESA can successfully retrieve viable sperm even in cases of obstructive azoospermia, offering hope to couples struggling with male infertility.
  3. Compatibility with IVF/ICSI: The sperm retrieved through PESA can be used in conjunction with IVF or ICSI to achieve fertilization and facilitate conception.
