Controlled Ovarian Stimulation

An Overview:

Controlled Ovarian Stimulation (COS) is a crucial component of assisted reproductive procedures like Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

Controlled Ovarian Stimulation involves the use of fertility medications to regulate and enhance the development of multiple eggs within the ovaries. By carefully controlling the hormonal environment, we aim to optimize the number and quality of eggs available for fertilization, thus increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

How Does it Work?

During Controlled Ovarian Stimulation, patients undergo a tailored medication regimen, often involving injectable hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These medications are carefully titrated based on individual response, with regular monitoring via blood tests and ultrasound scans to track follicle development.

Once the follicles reach an optimal size, a trigger shot of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is administered to induce ovulation, followed by a carefully timed procedure to retrieve the mature eggs for fertilization in the laboratory.

Why is it Important?

Controlled Ovarian Stimulation plays a crucial role in assisted reproduction by stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, thereby increasing the chances of successful fertilization and embryo development. This is particularly vital in procedures like IVF and ICSI, where the availability of healthy eggs is paramount to achieving a positive outcome.
