In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology used to help individuals and couples conceive when natural conception is not possible or has repeatedly failed. It involves retrieving mature eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory setting, and transferring the resulting embryo(s) into the uterus.
IVF may be recommended in cases of blocked fallopian tubes, severe male factor infertility, endometriosis, unexplained infertility, or when other fertility treatments have not been successful. It is also an option for individuals using donor sperm or eggs, or for those seeking fertility preservation through embryo or egg freezing.
The IVF process typically begins with ovarian stimulation using hormone injections to produce multiple eggs. These eggs are then collected through a minor procedure and combined with sperm in a lab. After fertilization, embryos are monitored for a few days before one or more are transferred to the uterus. Any additional viable embryos may be frozen for future use.
While IVF offers hope for many, it does not guarantee pregnancy and may require multiple cycles. Success rates depend on various factors including age, underlying health conditions, and response to treatment. Throughout the process, careful monitoring and support are essential to ensure the best possible outcomes.
