Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

An Overview:

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a minimally invasive fertility treatment that involves the placement of prepared sperm directly into the woman’s uterus during her fertile window. This procedure is performed to enhance the chances of fertilization by bringing the sperm closer to the fallopian tubes, where fertilization typically occurs.

Who Can Benefit from IUI?

IUI is often recommended for couples facing certain fertility challenges, including:

  • Mild male factor infertility
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Cervical factor infertility
  • Irregular ovulation or ovulation disorders
  • Mild endometriosis

The IUI Process:

01. Ovulation Monitoring:

Before proceeding with IUI, we closely monitor the woman’s menstrual cycle to determine the timing of ovulation. This may involve tracking hormonal levels and performing ultrasound scans.

02. Semen Preparation:

On the day of the IUI procedure, the male partner provides a semen sample, which undergoes processing in our laboratory. This process concentrates the sperm and removes any non-motile or abnormal sperm, ensuring optimal sperm quality for insemination.

03. Insemination:

Once the semen sample is prepared, I carefully insert a thin catheter through the cervix and into the uterus, delivering the prepared sperm directly into the uterine cavity. This process is painless and typically does not require anaesthesia.

04. Post-Insemination Care:

After the procedure, the woman may rest for a short period before resuming normal activities. I may recommend progesterone supplementation or other supportive measures to enhance the chances of implantation and pregnancy.
